US prosecutors are preparing to accuse the kidnapped Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife of torturing American prisoners held in Venezuelan custody, allegations critics view as fabricated by the US government to justify its illegal actions against Venezuela.
According to media reports on Wednesday, New York prosecutors are expected to bring new charges against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, alleging they were responsible for the torture of more than a dozen Americans held in Venezuelan government custody in recent years.
Sources familiar with the investigation did not provide details regarding the identities of the Americans involved or the specific acts of mistreatment cited.
However, investigators are reportedly discussing ways to bring charges against several additional individuals for their alleged complicity, potentially expanding the scope of the case beyond the couple.
These new allegations would be added to the existing criminal charges related to drug trafficking and narcoterrorism already filed against them.
Maduro and his wife were kidnapped during a US military raid on the presidential palace in Caracas in January.
The couple, who are currently being held without bail in a New York prison, have pleaded not guilty to the charges lodged by the US government.
The Venezuelan president has previously denounced the United States for using allegations of drug trafficking as a pretext to seize his country’s natural resources, particularly its oil.
Many experts agree that the couple is facing politically motivated charges fabricated by Washington to gain easier access to Venezuela's energy resources.
Meanwhile, Flores, the former first lady of Venezuela, is reportedly enduring severe hardships in her Brooklyn prison cell.
She has stated that she has not been feeling well and requires release to undergo a critical heart procedure.
Since her incarceration, she has reportedly lost two teeth and 12 kilograms.
Doctors have recommended that she undergo a cardiac catheterization, a diagnostic procedure in which a tube is threaded through blood vessels into the heart.
A court hearing is scheduled for Thursday to decide the matter.
