Iranian students have won five gold medals at the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics in Vietnam, securing the world championship title for the third consecutive year.

The five members of Iran’s national team claimed the gold medals at the 19th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA 2026) in the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi.

With their strong performance, Iranian students have once again demonstrated the scientific capabilities of the Islamic Republic of Iran at the prestigious international competition, which brought together more than 320 participants from over 66 countries around the world.

According to the organizing committee, the nearly 10-day competition featured 309 contestants who took part in exams covering theoretical knowledge, teamwork, astronomical observations using telescopes, data processing and practical examinations at the space pavilion.

The exams tested contestants’ professional knowledge, independent thinking, creativity, practical skills and ability to work collaboratively.

In the individual competitions, 51 contestants won gold medals, 48 received silver medals, 60 earned bronze medals and 22 were awarded consolation prizes.

The latest achievement follows a series of strong international results for Iran in recent years.

At the 66th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2025) in Australia, Iran finished 12th overall after winning two gold, three silver and one bronze medal.

Iranian students also delivered an impressive performance at the 55th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO 2025) in France, where the national team won five medals and secured 11th place among 94 participating countries.

At the 36th International Biology Olympiad (IBO 2025) in the Philippines, Iranian students earned four medals, three gold and one silver, placing the Islamic Republic second overall among 81 participating nations and 298 contestants.
