The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has dismantled a terrorist team in the southeastern city of Zahedan, in Sistan and Baluchestan Province, killing six members of the group and foiling their planned operation.

The public relations office of the Quds Base of the IRGC Ground Force said on Thursday that the terrorist team was identified early in the morning following reports from local residents and precise intelligence operations.

It added that the members of the cell were planning to carry out a terrorist attack in the area.

During the operation, the statement said, six members of the “Takfiri terrorist” group were killed, while a number of explosive devices were discovered and seized.

The IRGC said the operation to clear the group’s hideout in the Manzel-Ab area of Zahedan was still underway.

The operation would continue with the aim of fully purging the area from remaining terrorist elements, it added.

The operation comes amid intensified counter-terrorism efforts in Sistan and Baluchestan, where Iranian security forces have repeatedly targeted militant cells involved in attacks and attempts to destabilize the southeastern province.

Sistan and Baluchestan, which borders Pakistan, has witnessed several terrorist attacks targeting both civilians and security forces over the past years.

Terrorist groups carrying out attacks against Iranian interests are believed to be linked to foreign spy agencies.

On September 17, the IRGC intelligence forces neutralized armed militants belonging to the so-called Jaish al-Adl terrorist group during a clash in southeastern Iran.

Two terrorists were killed during the clash, while another was wounded and arrested by the security forces.
