‘Barking up the wrong tree’: FM Araghchi scoffs at UK’s efforts to link Iran to RAF Fairford ‘incident’
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi rejects Britain’s claim about Iran’s “playing a role” in a so-called “incident” near British air force station RAF Fairford, citing the irony between London’s making such a claim about Iran and the British police’s releasing the alleged suspects.
In a post on X on Wednesday, the top diplomat said, “[British] PM [Andy] Burnham says the UK Government ‘can confirm our belief that we believe Iran to have played a part’ in the RAF Fairford incident.”
“I can confirm Iran's belief that releasing supposed terrorists working for foreign states really says it all,” he added.
“You're barking up the wrong tree.”
On Monday, the British police released on bail five men arrested near the Royal Air Force base in Gloucestershire.
According to British media outlets, the men, reportedly all London-based Britons in their mid-20s, were arrested on “suspicion of explosives offenses and preparing to commit a terrorist act under UK counter-terrorism legislation” after reports of three “suspicious white vans” near the outpost on Sunday.
Even US President Donald Trump said he was surprised by the suspects' release, stating, “I wouldn’t have done that.”
The Iranian Embassy in London has similarly rebuffed claims about connection between Iran and the alleged incident, calling them “unfounded and malicious speculations” seeking to link Iran to the arrests. The Embassy also denounced some British individuals and media outlets for spreading “fabricated speculations” and warned of “Iranophobia propaganda.”
