Pezeshkian: Expanding Iran-Azerbaijan rail, air links key to strengthening ties
President Masoud Pezeshkian says stronger transport links will help expand relations between Iran and Azerbaijan, underscoring the need to expand rail and air connections between Tehran and Baku.
Speaking during a meeting with Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev in Tehran on Tuesday, Pezeshkian said it was imperative that the two sides make maximum use of the existing capacities to further develop relations.
The Iranian president said Azerbaijan holds a special place in the Islamic Republic’s foreign policy, and that the two countries are “relatives and brothers” and should use their existing capacities and geographical proximity for the good of the two nations.
Pezeshkian said Iran and Azerbaijan also closely connected in scientific, cultural, economic, political and security fields.
He said borders should not become an obstacle to the development of relations.
Pezeshkian also welcomed the understandings reached during Mustafayev’s visit and his meetings with Iran’s minister of roads and urban development and energy minister.
“Land, air and rail routes between the two countries should be further developed, because the more these routes are connected and strengthened, the greater the opportunities for expanding and consolidating ties between the two nations,” Pezeshkian said.
Tehran and Baku should work with shared determination to advance their agreed objectives, he added.
For his part, Mustafayev reaffirmed Baku’s determination to expand relations with Tehran, underscoring the need to follow up on and implement bilateral agreements.
Mustafayev also highlighted the shared determination of Tehran and Baku to expand transport and communications cooperation, placing a premium on strengthening connectivity and corridor routes and making use of the existing capacities in this field.
