Russian Tu-95 strategic bomber crashes, 6 crew killed
A Russian Tu-95 strategic bomber has crashed during a training flight, killing at least six crew members and injuring another, Russia’s Defense Ministry says.
The ministry said in a statement on Tuesday that the aircraft went down in an uninhabited area in the Amur Region in Russia’s Far East, which borders China to the south.
The statement said that six crew members were killed and one was injured and evacuated to a medical facility.
The aircraft was flying without any ammunition on board, the statement added.
The plane reportedly crashed after three of its engines allegedly failed during takeoff. After the crash, the aircraft caught fire and its fuel tanks exploded. The circumstances of the crash are still under investigation.
Tu-95 is a large, four-engine, turboprop-powered strategic bomber that entered service with the Soviet Union in 1956 and is expected to remain in service with the Russian Air Force until at least 2040.
The bombers are part of the Russian nuclear triad and are capable of carrying missiles with thermonuclear warheads.
