Enemies seek to weaken Islamic Republic, advance ‘Greater Israel’ plot: Army spokesman
Iran’s Army spokesman says the enemies of the Islamic Republic are pursuing objectives similar to those pursued by former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein during the imposed war of the 1980s.
Brigadier General Mohammad Akrami-Nia said on Tuesday Saddam had sought not only to overthrow the Islamic Republic at the outset of his aggression but also harbored ambitions to partition Iran. He had even assigned Arabic names to Iranian cities, the general said.
The resistance of the Iranian people, General Akrami-Nia said, prevented the enemy from retaining even an inch of Iranian territory.
“Today, the enemies of the Islamic Republic of Iran are pursuing similar objectives,” the Iranian general said.
“Their overt objective is to weaken and overthrow the Islamic Republic, while another strategic objective is to advance ‘Greater Israel’ plans in the region.”
Just as the Iranian people had defended their independence and territorial integrity during the imposed war, Akrami-Nia added, they have once again prevented the enemy from achieving its objectives through their presence and resistance.
“The enemy believed it could surprise the Iranian people with a lightning operation, but today it is the enemy that has been surprised by the people’s presence, the resistance of the Armed Forces and the defensive capabilities of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
Addressing the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, Akrami-Nia said one of the major outcomes of the recent war had been the establishment of an “Iranian order” in the strategic waterway. He said the Iranian armed forces were committed to maintaining the situation.
“The enemy is attempting through media hype to portray maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz as normal, but the realities of energy markets and shipping show that the current situation cannot be compared with the conditions before the war.”
The Strait of Hormuz is Iran’s strategic asset, General Akrami-Nia said, adding that “the Armed Forces will firmly and decisively defend the rights of the Iranian people and will not allow the enemy to exploit this strategic waterway as it did in the past.”
The Iranian Armed Forces have been in full control of the Strait of Hormuz since the start of the illegal US-Israeli aggression on February 28.
Commercial traffic through the waterway has fallen sharply, with vessel movements dropping to single digits.
Tehran says it will not reopen the waterway until the United States meets its demands and takes steps to restore Iran’s trust.
