Sanders raps Israel for barring Arab-led parties from election, urges end to US military aid
US Senator Bernie Sanders has condemned a decision by the Israeli regime’s central elections committee to disqualify major Arab-led political slates from the regime’s upcoming legislative election, renewing his call for Washington to halt US military aid to Tel Aviv.
The committee voted to bar the Arab-majority lists from appearing on the ballot four weeks before the October election. The decision is expected to face a legal challenge before the regime’s supreme court.
In a statement posted on X on Tuesday, Sanders said that the committee’s decision would deny political representation to the Palestinians in the occupied territories, who account for roughly 20 percent of those living in the territories.
"Israel's election committee banned both major Arab parties four weeks before the election," he stated. "If it wasn’t already clear, [Israeli prime minister Benjamin] Netanyahu and his far-right allies” want to muffle the voices of the Palestinians, the senator wrote, adding, “NO MORE US MILITARY AID TO ISRAEL."
Sanders has previously called for US military assistance to the regime to be suspended.

Critics of the decision say that removing the Arab-led factions from the ballot would disenfranchise more than one million people.
Adalah, the Arab minority rights legal center representing all the targeted parties and candidates, described the proceedings as “arbitrary, inciting, and racist.” It said the case against the joint list leaned on outdated material.
Human rights advocate Ubai al-Aboudi has also said the decision marks “the first time that all representation has been barred,” calling it a sign of “the mentality and extremism of the current Israeli political structure.”
