Iranian delegation will hold talks with mediators in New York: Report
The Iranian delegation, which has travelled to New York to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, will reportedly meet in the US city with mediators trying to get Tehran-Washington talks back on track.
Citing a source familiar with the matter, Tasnim news agency reported on Monday that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his accompanying delegation will hold talks with mediators later in the day to review developments and exchange views on the latest issues.
The report added that there are no plans for negotiations with the United States.
The report came as the illegal US war on Iran hits the 7-month mark, with a stalemate in talks between Tehran and Washington to permanently end their hostilities due to the latter’s acts of mischief in the region and its rejection of diplomacy.
On September 26, US President Donald Trump turned down an Iranian proposal to resume talks followed by the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz within seven days.
The plan also called on the US to release frozen Iranian funds, lift oil sanctions and end its inhumane naval blockade on Iran’s ports.
Araghchi said Iran is open to “real diplomacy” but ready to confront any new US aggression even if it comes to “a doomsday war.”
The United States and Israel launched their criminal war of aggression against Iran on February 28. They assassinated Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, along with senior military commanders.
Forty days later, on April 8, the enemies were forced to accept a ceasefire amid Iran’s resistance, successful, decisive retaliatory operations, and a powerful grip on the Strait of Hormuz.
In July, the United States conducted waves of deadly air raids on Iran and imposed a naval blockade of the country in violation of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Islamic Republic, signed on June 17, to end the war.
In response, the Iranian armed forces launched devastating strikes against strategic American targets across West Asia and declared the Strait of Hormuz closed to all traffic.
