US F-16 fighter jet crashes at air base in Germany
A US F-16 fighter jet crashed at Spangdahlem Air Base in western Germany on Tuesday, adding to a string of US military aircraft losses following the heavy toll suffered by American air assets during Washington’s aggression against Iran.
The aircraft went down at approximately 2:30 p.m. local time (1230 GMT), Spangdahlem Air Base said.
Authorities in the Bitburg-Prüm district, where the base is located, said emergency and disaster response units were dispatched to the scene but could not immediately provide further details about the incident.
The Spangdahlem base is home to an F-16 fighter jet squadron comprising around 20 aircraft that support US Air Force and NATO operations worldwide.
According to recent figures, the base has around 5,000 military and civilian personnel, plus dependents. The US airfield also employs between 700 and 800 Germans.
The crash comes after a Pentagon watchdog report found that the United States lost dozens of aircraft between February 28 and June 30, including at least 30 MQ-9 Reaper drones destroyed by Iranian attacks during the conflict. The number has since risen to 53.
In October 2019, a US F-16 fighter jet crashed near the airbase during a routine training flight, with the pilot ejecting before impact.
The US Air Force has been present at Spangdahlem since the mid-1950s. Alongside Ramstein Air Base near Kaiserslautern, the facility is considered one of the most important US military airfields in Germany.
