Eleven injured as gunman opens fire near high school in western Turkey
At least eleven people, including students, have sustained injuries when a gunman opened fire outside a high school in Turkey’s western province of Manisa.
Local media reported that the attack took place around 8 a.m. local time (0500 GMT) on Tuesday near İnci Üzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in the Turgutlu district.
The governor’s office said in a statement published on the social media platform X that the injured were rushed to the nearest medical facility after the shooting. Two of them are reportedly in serious condition.
“A report was received regarding gunfire in the vicinity of the Inci Uzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in our Turgutlu district at 07:59,” the governor’s office said.
Police and medical teams were on the scene, while security around the school has been tightened.
Security forces arrested the suspect after he attempted to flee the scene. The motive for the attack was under investigation.
“After the incident, the suspect believed to have fired the weapon was caught by security forces and taken into custody,” the statement read.
Several images of the assailant were posted online, showing him walking near the school holding a gun.
Turkish Justice Minister Akin Gürlek stated that four people have been detained in connection with the incident.
The attack marks the latest such shooting in Turkey, and comes months after two school shootings in the country.
Back in April, a 14-year-old opened fire at a school in the Kahramanmaras province, killing nine students aged 10 and 11 and one teacher. The youth attacker died at the scene.
Separately, a former student opened fire at his former high school in the southeastern province of Sanliurfa, wounding 16 people, mostly students, before taking his own life when confronted by police.
