Four injured as explosions shake Aleppo munitions depot in northern Syria
At least four people have been injured after a series of explosions ripped through a military installation in Syria’s northern province of Aleppo, while civil defense teams evacuated nearby homes and closed roads leading to the site.
The Syrian Arab News Agency, citing local sources, reported that the blast occurred at an “army site” in the vicinity of the town of al-Eis, adding that local authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the explosions.
One civilian was injured by shrapnel as a result of the blast at the ammunition depot, SANA reported.
Two civilians suffered temporary “breathing difficulties,” and another civilian was injured in a traffic accident while attempting to flee the blast area, it added.
Syria’s civil defense teams transported the injured to hospital and evacuated three families from the blast site.
Aleppo governor Azzam al-Gharib urged residents not to leave their homes for the time being, adding that “hospitals, ambulance and emergency teams are on full alert.”
Roads leading to the site of the explosions were closed “to ensure the safety of civilians,” Aleppo’s Internal Security Command was quoted by SANA as saying.
Several such blasts have previously occurred in Syria.
An explosion of unknown origin killed 11 people at a military site in the Ayyash area of Syria’s eastern province of Dayr al-Zawr on Friday.
On September 9, at least 14 people were killed and another 11 wounded as a result of an explosion at a temporary site used to store weapons and remnants of the country’s foreign-backed militancy.
The explosion took place near the city of Sarmada in the northwestern Idlib province.
Since the collapse of Assad’s government in early December 2024, the Israeli military has been launching a series of airstrikes against military facilities, installations, and ammunition reserves that were previously under the control of the Syrian armed forces.
Israel has faced considerable criticism for terminating the 1974 ceasefire agreement with Syria and capitalizing on instability in the conflict-affected nation to expand its territorial ambitions.
Israeli military strikes have predominantly targeted the southern Syrian provinces of Quneitra, Dara’a, and Damascus, with these regions accounting for roughly 80 percent of all verified Israeli assaults.
