Moscow intercepts massive Ukrainian drone swarm during elections; civilian casualties reported
Russian air defenses intercepted a massive swarm of Ukrainian drones in a relentless overnight assault on the capital and its surrounding regions this Sunday, coinciding with Russia’s presidential elections.
The unprecedented attack has resulted in civilian casualties, damage to a suburban fuel refinery, and the grounding of dozens of flights, according to local reports.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that up to 1,600 Ukrainian drones heading toward Russia were intercepted by air defense systems. At least 450 of those drones headed towards Moscow.
The Moscow region governor announced that civilian deaths and injuries have occurred following direct drone strikes on residential buildings in several areas of the region.
The impact of projectiles and falling debris also caused significant damage to a fuel refinery in the Moscow suburbs.
Emergency response teams and firefighters remain heavily deployed across the city, particularly around the industrial complex and residential neighborhoods affected by the falling fragments.
The sheer volume and duration of the attack have severely disrupted daily life and transportation in the capital.
According to the state news agency TASS, stringent security restrictions have forced the grounding of more than 30 flights at Moscow’s major airports.
By targeting energy infrastructure, logistical hubs, and the capital itself, Ukraine aims to disrupt the Russian war economy and challenge Moscow’s secure airspace and domestic stability, especially during a major national political event.
