Trump’s ‘war of choice’ against Iran ‘a disaster’: House Democratic leader

US House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries has criticized the Trump administration’s economic policies and its war against Iran, saying the aggression has weakened Americans economically while leaving Iran stronger.

In an interview with MeidasTouch, Jeffries said, “MAGA is running scared,” arguing that the movement was facing growing public accountability.

“They can run, but they can't hide because the clock is ticking,” he said, pointing to the 46 days remaining until the American people would have an opportunity to hold them accountable for their “complete and total” failure.

He said President Donald Trump’s economic policies had failed to deliver for Americans.

“Their economic policies have been a disaster. They're hurting the American people,” Jeffries said.

Turning to the war against Iran, the Democratic leader said, “This reckless and costly war of choice in Iran has been a disaster.”

“Iran is stronger, and the American people are economically weaker as a result of what's going on in [West Asia], including as a result of gas prices skyrocketing through the roof,” he added.

Jeffries also criticized the Federal Reserve’s decision to raise interest rates, saying the move reflected problems with the Trump administration’s economic policies.

“We know that Donald Trump's own handpicked head of the Federal Reserve Board concluded that Donald Trump's economy is failing so badly that he had to raise interest rates over the objection of Donald Trump,” he said.

Jeffries also commented on House Speaker Mike Johnson’s decision to leave Washington ahead of the midterm elections.

“So you're absolutely right. I think Mike Johnson concluded, 'we better get out of town before sundown because this is not going well for us',” he said.

Jeffries’ comments come as the economic costs of the aggression against Iran continue to draw attention in Washington. The Congressional Budget Office has estimated that the war has cost the United States $38 billion as of August 1 and projected additional costs of about $3 billion per month if hostilities continued.

US Vice President JD Vance has reportedly sought “blunt and unfiltered” insight from American generals on the war of aggression against Iran as the war drags on amid dwindling US weapons stockpiles.

The United States and Israel launched their war of aggression against Iran on February 28, but forty days later, on April 8, they were forced to accept a ceasefire amid Iran’s resistance, successful retaliatory operations, and a powerful grip on the Strait of Hormuz.

In July, the United States conducted waves of deadly air raids on Iran and imposed a naval blockade of the country in violation of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Islamic Republic, signed on June 17, to end the war.

In response, the Iranian Armed Forces launched devastating strikes against strategic American targets across West Asia and declared the Strait of Hormuz closed to all traffic.
