Iran condemns deadly terrorist attack on mosque in Pakistan
Iran has condemned an attack on a mosque inside a police complex in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province that claimed the lives of 21 people and wounded 103 others, including police officers and civilians.
On Friday, Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, expressed condolences to the families of those killed, as well as to the Pakistani government and people, following the attack in the city of Kohat during Friday prayers.
The official emphasized the Islamic Republic’s “principled position of unequivocally condemning all forms of terrorism and violent extremism,” stressing that “terrorist and violent acts targeting civilians and security forces have absolutely no justification.”
He also called for stronger regional cooperation and coordination to combat terrorism effectively and continuously.
The attack began with an explosion near a mosque inside the Old Police Lines compound, which houses police and counterterrorism offices. According to the Pakistani police, an attacker subsequently detonated explosives near the Special Branch building as security forces exchanged fire with armed assailants inside the compound.
District Health Officer Kohat Dr. Nasir Hussain said 21 people, including 15 police officers, were killed and 103 others, including 73 police personnel and 30 civilians, were wounded.
The official said some of the wounded remained under treatment and that further details would be released later. The police had initially said an explosives-laden vehicle might have rammed the complex, but the precise cause of the first explosion remained under investigation.
The attack came a day after a roadside bomb killed six soldiers in neighboring Hangu district.
