UN confirms US wedding strike in Iran, challenges claims civilians were not targeted
The UN has confirmed that the US struck a wedding ceremony in southern Iran, challenging Washington’s claims that civilians were not targeted in its sustained military aggression against Iran.
The UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran issued a press statement on the UN website on Tuesday, raising questions about US compliance with international law in protecting civilians during armed conflicts.
“Repeated airstrikes causing civilian casualties raise serious questions about whether all necessary measures are being taken to comply with States’ obligations under international law, including to take all precautionary measures to avoid civilian deaths,” said Max du Plessis, an expert member of the Fact-Finding Mission.
The statement confirmed that the US had targeted a wedding ceremony in Iran’s southern fishing port of Kuhestak on September 1, an attack which killed five people, including children, and injured dozens more.
It also questioned positions adopted by the US government and military in recent weeks suggesting that civilians have "not been targeted" in the aggression against Iran.
“These strikes are yet another devastating reminder of the human cost of the conflict between the United States and Israel and Iran,” said Sara Hossain, Chair of the Fact-Finding Mission.
“Civilians must be protected at all times, and constant care must be taken to spare civilians and civilian objects from the effects of hostilities.”
The statement also made a reference to another attack on civilians in the southern port of Qeshm on July 30, where a man, a woman, and their two-year-old son were killed and two other children of the family were injured after their residential home was destroyed in a US airstrike.
“Strikes on civilians should trigger an in-depth review of the events, methods, and impacts to prevent further losses, and secure truth, justice and reparations for victims,” said Viviana Krsticevic, an expert member of the Mission.
Iran’s coastal province of Hormozgan, where civilians were killed in the two US airstrikes mentioned by UN investigators, was the scene of a deadly massacre on February 28, when the United States and Israel started their joint aggression against Iran and targeted a school, killing nearly 160 pupils and staff.
