Iraqi Kurdistan says will not allow territory to be used to threaten Iran
The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) says Iraq and its Kurdistan Region are committed to preventing their territory from being used to threaten the security of neighboring countries, notably Iran.
The PUK leader Bafel Talabani made the remarks during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran on Tuesday.
He underscored the need for closer coordination between Iran and Iraq to implement a bilateral security agreement and disarm groups that threaten the security of the two countries.
“Iraq and the Kurdistan Region will never allow their territory to become a haven for harming or threatening the security of countries in the region, particularly the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Talabani said, according to Iran’s Foreign Ministry.
Talabani, who is leading a high-level delegation to Tehran for talks with senior Iranian officials, also expressed support for expanding cooperation with Iran in security, economy and trade.
He said Iran was a longstanding and strong supporter of the Iraqi people, and that the PUK valued its ties with Tehran, while highlighting the historic and friendly relations between the peoples of Iran, Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
Araghchi, for his part, said Iran was ready to further develop ties with the Kurdistan Region, particularly Sulaymaniyah, with a focus on expanding trade and economic exchanges, strengthening security coordination along the shared border and combating terrorism.
The Iranian foreign minister also referred to “terrorist activities” along the border and attempts by hostile actors to exploit the situation, calling for greater cooperation to safeguard border security under the bilateral security agreement.
Araghchi urged Kurdish groups and other countries in the region to remain vigilant against “false flag” operations aimed at creating divisions among neighboring states.
Tehran and Baghdad continue consultations over bilateral relations and security along the border.
