Russia’s Rosatom says Iran remains top priority in West Asia
Russia’s state-run Rosatom has announced plans to increase its staff at the Bushehr power plant, saying Iran remains the nuclear company’s top priority in West Asia.
Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev made the remarks on Saturday on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, India.
“We are actively working in the Middle East, and Iran will be our priority,” he said.
He added that Rosatom is sending dozens of specialists to Iran for construction and maintenance at the Bushehr nuclear facility even though the situation in the country has not returned to normal following the illegal US-Israeli aggression.
Meanwhile, Likhachev noted that 47 Rosatom experts have returned to the Bushehr power plant so far, and that the company plans to increase that number to 150 in the near future.
He also said he hoped Iranian specialists would proceed with work on the two new units under construction in Bushehr.
In March, Rosatom evacuated hundreds of staff after the United States and Israel launched their criminal war on Iran on February 28.
Earlier this month, Likhachev said Rosatom specialists will begin scheduled maintenance work at the first unit of the Bushehr power plant in mid-September by replacing the fuel assemblies.
He further said that the company is also engaged in building the facility’s unit 2 and unit 3.
Russia and Iran signed a contract for the construction of the first unit of the Bushehr power plant in 1995. The 1,000-megawatt facility started operating in 2011.
In 2014, Russia and Iran signed another deal for the construction of two new reactors at Bushehr, with a combined capacity of about 2,100 megawatts.
