A controversial US tech firm with close links to the Israeli regime has reported that one of its Artificial Intelligence (AI) models was used in missile projects and espionage activities.
Anthropic AI admitted on Friday that its AI models had been used in illegal activities ranging from weapons design to mass surveillance campaigns.
The new report claims its Claude model was used to develop rocket and long-range ballistic missile guidance software and to power state-linked cyber-espionage operations.
Anthropic’s report claims that the users employed a Claude agent “in place of human software engineers,” reportedly assigning different instances of the model specific roles to write missile-guidance and flight-control software.
While internal safeguards blocked many requests, Anthropic admitted several slipped through. The operators avoided detection by obscuring their ultimate goals and breaking tasks across separate sessions, so no single prompt gave away the operation.
The report said the company banned the accounts involved and “shared threat information with public- and private-sector partners to mitigate risks posed by the actors.”
Anthropic's report comes just days after a researcher at the firm resigned, warning that the reckless pursuit of more advanced AI poses an imminent threat.
Jacob Coxon, a British researcher at leading US AI lab Anthropic, publicly resigned on Tuesday, citing deep concerns over the tech industry's irresponsible development of artificial intelligence.
Coxon said competing tech companies were ignoring the “civilization stakes” and “racing straight to self-improving super-intelligence and gambling with our lives.”
Meantime, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a "united, sustained, global response" to the threats posed by the reckless development as well as illegal use of AI against people.
Anthropic has been deeply involved in the US-Israeli war of aggression against Iran since late February.
American missiles used AI data to strike an elementary school in southern Iran’s Minab and a sports hall in Lamerd, killing nearly 200 civilians, most of them children.
The unprovoked attacks exposed the deadly use of AI models, in which artificial intelligence, fed with outdated intelligence and deployed without adequate human oversight, had transformed the process of selecting targets into an industrialized mechanism for civilian death.
The joint US-Israeli aggression against Iran, codenamed “Operation Epic Fury,” has been described as unprecedented in its use of AI technology.
