Iran FM derides US’s ‘novel’ solution: More sanctions after war failure
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi derides the US’s self-described “novel” way of trying to force Iran into submission, which has seen Washington try to return to its chronically-unsuccessful coercive economic approach towards the Islamic Republic following the failure of the most recent unprovoked war on the country.
The top diplomat made the remarks in a post on X on Wednesday, detailing the ill-fated sequence followed by Washington.
“After 47 years of sanctions, the US went to war with Iran on behalf of Israel. The fallout has been disastrous for America, including its standing worldwide,” he said.
The US and the Israeli regime waged the war from February 28 until April 7 after the failure of a previous round in June last year and the unexceptional defeat of Washington’s and its allies’ decades-long campaign of economic pressure against the Islamic Republic.
US President Donald Trump announced a unilateral ceasefire in the latest bout of the aggression after the campaign was faced with at least 100 waves of uncompromising and successful Iranian retaliation and the Islamic Republic’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which began sending shockwaves throughout global energy markets.
“After failing to achieve its aims through sanctions or war, Washington’s ‘novel’ solution is…more sanctions. Seriously?” Araghchi asked.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the “Economic D-Day” campaign against Iran on August 24.
It has been faced with strong backlash from major regional and international actors, including Pakistan, China, and Russia that have downplayed Washington’s ability to bring the campaign to bear on Tehran.
