Top commander warns of strikes on US bases if Iranian oil tankers are attacked
Iran has warned the United States that any attack on Iranian oil tankers would trigger strikes on US bases across the region.
Major General Ali Abdollahi, head of the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, issued the warning in a statement on Tuesday.
“The aggressive US military has issued an evacuation warning to Iranian oil tankers so that it can strike them,” Abdollahi said.
“Therefore, I declare that any attack on Iranian oil tankers will result in US bases in the region being targeted by the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
The warning comes amid ongoing US naval blockade and aerial aggression against Iran. Having failed in its military aggression, jointly launched by Israel in February, Washington has resorted to acts of “maritime piracy” by imposing a blockade on Iranian ports and targeting Iranian vessels.
Iran has responded to the attacks by launching precision strikes against US military assets across the region.
Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy said on Saturday that it had struck three US-linked vessels and three trespassing oil tankers, in retaliation for earlier US attacks on Iranian tankers.
Major General Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, said on Sunday that Iran had successfully tested a new anti-ship missile above a US warship in regional waters.
“For the first time, we tested our anti-ship missile above an American warship,” Rezaei said. “This special missile created hell for the Americans, and they fled.”
The developments come amid a sharp escalation between Tehran and Washington over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime chokepoints.
Iran imposed restrictions on the chokepoint after the launch of the latest round of unprovoked American-Israeli aggression against the country.
The Islamic Republic and the United States subsequently agreed to a 60-day reopening period under a Pakistan-mediated memorandum of understanding reached in June.
Iran took measures to ensure safe and legal transit through the chokepoint in accordance with the understanding. But US violations forced it to reestablish the closure.
Tehran has conditioned the reopening of the waterway on several prerequisites.
They include the complete lifting of the illegal US naval and economic blockade against the Islamic Republic, a durable cessation of aggression on all fronts, including Lebanon.
