Air-raid alerts go off in Kiev as 3-day truce with Russia ends
Air-raid alerts have been sounded in Ukraine's capital Kiev and neighboring cities as Russia's three-day ceasefire ends.
Sirens were heard on Tuesday across Ukraine, a day after US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner wrapped up their tour of the region meant to resume stalled peace talks.
Moscow and Kiev had agreed to pause strikes on each other's capital cities during the visits.
Witkoff and Kushner arrived in Moscow on Saturday, where US President Donald Trump’s developer friend and son-in-law met and held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
After "constructive" talks with Putin, the US envoys left Moscow for Ukraine, where they held several rounds of talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“Substantive progress was made, including movement on scheduling additional trilateral talks,” Witkoff said on X following the talks.
Zelensky said after the meeting with Witkoff and Kushner that he expected the United States to supply Ukrainian forces with "serious volumes" of arms and munitions.
"If the war drags on until winter — and that is how things currently look — we will need a 'winter package'," Zelensky said.
As Trump’s emissaries left Kiev and the halt on attacks ended, Ukrainian and Russian forces staged attacks involving ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as drones.
According to Ukrainian officials, six people were wounded as a result of the attacks, which also damaged buildings.
Kiev’s mayor Vitali Klitschko earlier said people had been trapped inside a building, and that the attacks had sparked fires across the city.
In recent months, Ukraine has ramped up its attacks using homemade drones to strike targets deeper into Russian territory.
Saratov's governor said on Tuesday that a Ukrainian drone attack targeted civilian infrastructure in the city and wounded some people, in a message on Telegram, Reuters reported.
The Ukrainian forces also shelled the Donetsk region 53 times over the past 24 hours, injuring 14 civilians.
"We recorded 53 armed attacks by Ukrainian forces … over the past 24 hours. Reports were received of 14 civilians being injured, including a child born in 2010," read a statement released by the department for documenting Ukraine’s war crimes.
According to the department, Ukrainian forces fired 65 munitions. Three residential buildings, five civilian infrastructure facilities, trucks, passenger cars and electric locomotives were damaged.
