Volcanic island in Indonesia erupts, canceling hundreds of flights and stranding thousands
A volcano on Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau island erupted twice on Sunday, sending volcanic ash across parts of western Indonesia and disrupting air travel.
The eruptions prompted the closure of Soekarno-Hatta and Halim Perdanakusuma airports in Jakarta, along with six other airports, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.
Authorities reported no casualties or evacuation orders but urged residents and visitors to stay at least 3 kilometers from the active crater.
Volcanic ash also spread across parts of Jakarta and Lampung province, according to Indonesian authorities.
