Lavrov says Russia at ‘start of real war’ with West
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warns that his country is at the "start of a real war" with the West.
Last month several drones targeted Leipzig-Halle Airport in eastern Germany, with one hitting a parked plane and another reportedly striking an inbound cargo jet. German authorities pinned the blame on Russia, accusing Moscow of orchestrating the attacks and ordered a series of retaliatory measures, including the closure of a Russian consulate and cultural center in Germany.
On Sunday, Lavrov slammed the German government for the allegations leveled against Moscow.
In an interview with the Vesti media outlet, Lavrov pointed out that “no one bothered to investigate” who owned the drones in the Leipzig incident.
The top Russian diplomat said accusing Russian forces of being behind the incident at Leipzig airport amounts to "by and large, the start of a real war."
The Russian FM reiterated Moscow's firm denial of any sort of involvement in the incident, criticizing German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for using the incident as a pretext for his efforts to militarize the nation once more.
"All these statements by Merz about making Germany the leading military power in Europe once again — they are being put into practice. He is, in effect, declaring war on us," Lavrov said.
“He's essentially declaring war on us. And the lessons of history have not been learned at all,” Lavrov said.
He told the interviewer at channel Vesti that “this kind of game is absolutely unacceptable,” warning that “they want war again.”
The top Russian diplomat also criticized what Germany had described as its retaliatory measures in response to the attack on Leipzig airport, including the closure of the Russian House Cultural Center in Berlin as well as the Russian consulate in Bonn.
Russian Consul General Oleg Krasnitsky said German officials had ordered the Bonn staff and their families to leave the country.
"At the moment, about 70 employees have been ordered to leave before the 18th this month, plus family members," Krasnitsky told RIA Novosti on Friday.
