US has long record of turning weddings into funerals: Iran embassy

The Iranian Embassy in London has slammed the United States for a long history of deadly attacks on wedding ceremonies in Afghanistan, Iraq and Yemen, citing the latest incident in Iran’s Hormozgan Province.

In a post on X on Thursday, the embassy referred to the US attack on a wedding ceremony in the port city of Kuhestak in Sirik County, describing it as part of a longstanding pattern of deadly attacks by US forces and Washington-backed allies against civilian wedding ceremonies.

“If you want to turn a wedding into a funeral, leave it to the US terrorist military. They have a long track record of doing exactly that,” the embassy wrote.

The Iranian diplomatic mission then listed a number of incidents that demonstrated this pattern.

It said that on July 1, 2002, more than 100 people were killed in the bombing of a wedding in Kakarak village in Afghanistan’s Uruzgan Province.

The embassy said that in September 2003, a wedding in Fallujah, Iraq, was bombed, leaving more than five people killed or wounded. In May 2004, it added, a bombing targeting a wedding in Bakar al-Dhib village in Iraq’s Anbar Province killed 42 people.

In October 2004, another wedding in Fallujah was bombed, killing 13 people, including the groom, according to the embassy.

The statement also referred to a July 6, 2008 attack on a wedding in Deh Bala, Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan, which it said killed 47 people, including the bride.

It further cited a November 2008 attack on a wedding in Wagh Baghtu, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, in which 37 people, including 23 children, were killed.

According to the embassy, 18 people, including nine children, were also killed in June 2012 in an attack on a wedding in Afghanistan’s Logar Province.

The Iranian embassy also cited the September 28, 2015 bombing of a wedding in Wahijah, Taiz, Yemen, saying 131 women and children were killed in an attack carried out by a US-backed coalition.

The embassy identified the September 1, 2026 attack on a wedding in Kuhestak, Sirik County, Hormozgan Province, as the latest example in this series of attacks, saying dozens of people were killed or wounded.

“Stop war crimes, prosecute war criminals,” the embassy emphasized.

Iran calls on the UN Security Council to condemn an unprovoked and deadly US attack on a residential home hosting a wedding ceremony in southern Islamic Republic.

The US military launched attacks on areas of Hormozgan Province at around 8 p.m. local time on Tuesday, with a residential building in the port of Kuhestak, where a wedding ceremony was being held, among the sites hit.

The attack killed five people and wounded 68 others, with a four-year-old child among those killed.

Iran has formally protested the attack in a letter to the UN secretary-general and the president of the UN Security Council, describing it as a war crime and calling for Washington to be condemned and held accountable.

Iran has also stressed that the Kuhestak attack was not an isolated incident, but part of a broader pattern of US attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure since the beginning of the military aggression on March 1.
