Leader agrees to pardon, commute sentences of over 2,500 convicts

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei has instructed the pardoning or commutation of the sentences of over 2,500 convicts.

On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Imam Jafar Sadiq (AS), Iran’s Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei requested pardons, sentence reductions, and sentence commutations for 2,577 convicts.

In response, the Leader delegated the decision on the matter to Mohseni-Ejei himself.

Therefore, the Judiciary chief, after the necessary reviews, ordered the implementation of pardons, sentence reductions, and sentence commutations for these convicts.

The prisoners who were granted clemency included inmates convicted by the country’s public and Islamic Revolution courts, the Judicial Organization of the Armed Forces, and the State Discretionary Punishment Organization.

Article 110 of the Constitution Law gives the Leader the right to pardon or reduce the sentences of prisoners upon the request of the head of the Judiciary.

Clemency, however, does not apply to all types of prisoners, including those sentenced for their role in armed struggle against the country, armed or organized drug trafficking, rape, armed robbery, arms smuggling, abduction, bribery, and embezzlement.
