A US Democratic senator has slammed President Donald Trump and his oil giant friends for profiteering in the war on Iran.
Pointing to the fact that US oil companies aligned with Trump have profited from the war on Iran, Elizabeth Warren said on Friday that the Republican is “the most corrupt president ever in American history.”
“So the question becomes: What do we do about that? When Donald Trump starts a war with Iran and his oil buddies, who gave him a million dollars for his campaign. When they start making profits like crazy, then our job is to call it out and fight back. That’s what we do,” she said in an election rally for a junior senator from Massachusetts.
“You want to lower the price of gasoline? End the war in Iran. Just end it,” Warren said, echoing similar arguments by US allies in Europe, the Persian Gulf and beyond.
US oil giants have made astronomical profits since the war on Iran began on February 28, which even Trump criticized earlier this month.
CBS News reported that Trump has continued to buy and sell stock holdings in oil and natural gas companies, according to his financial disclosure filings. The White House said Trump is not involved in his trades.
Trump pockets the windfall as the Americans pay more at gas pumps.
Congress’ Joint Economic Committee minority staff reports show Trump’s holdings of oil and gas stocks have gained millions of dollars in value since he launched the illegal war on Iran earlier this year.
The average cost of a gallon of gas at the gas station has risen since late February from about $2.94 a gallon to $4.10 on Aug. 26, according to the report.
While this has meant higher costs for consumers, it has also fueled big profits for oil and gas companies and their stockholders, including Trump himself.
In the past, all US presidents have traditionally avoided holding stocks, considering it a breach of trust.
However, not only does Trump continue this practice, but he also advises his family and, in turn, the Trump Organization, to make investments in specific stocks.
Political experts see this move as unethical due to Trump’s impact on global stocks’ fluctuations. During his 2016 presidential campaign, Trump had vowed that he would never put his own interests above those of the Americans. “Please remember this: I will never put personal profit before national security. Nobody should. … I will never, ever put the special interests before the national interests.”
