Zaidi: Iraq will declare full restoration of national sovereignty on September 30
Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi says Iraq will declare complete restoration of sovereignty over all its territory on September 30, when the US-led coalition is scheduled to end its military mission in the country and complete the withdrawal of its forces.
Speaking at a ceremony hosted by the Sunni Endowment Office in the capital Baghdad on Monday to commemorate the birthday anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Zaidi said the date will mark a major step in Iraq’s efforts to consolidate state authority and national sovereignty.
“On September 30, the Iraqi nation will announce the completion of its sovereignty over all sacred Iraqi land.”
Zaidi also reiterated the government’s plan to disarm armed groups and bring weapons under state control.
“Political forces have agreed to move forward with the process, with mechanisms for the surrender of weapons being worked out.”
The Iraqi prime minister also extended his gratitude to the Supreme Religious Authority in the holy city of Najaf, Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, and other religious institutions for emphasizing the importance of Iraq’s security, civil peace, social cohesion and enforcement of law.
Iraq should not be used as a launching pad for attacks against other states, Zaid said, adding that the principle would strengthen the government’s standing as it seeks to safeguard national sovereignty.
He said his government had pledged to build a fully sovereign Iraq while pursuing reforms, fighting corruption, bolstering the economy and developing security institutions operating under the constitution.
In 2024, Washington and Baghdad agreed to conclude the US-led operations against the Takfiri Daesh terrorist group.
US forces withdrew from most bases across Iraq in 2025. But they remained in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region.
