Iran mocks US ‘victory’ claim: Why launch ‘greatest financial offensive’ then?
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi has challenged US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s claim that Washington has dismantled Iran’s military capabilities and buried its nuclear program, questioning why the United States would need to launch its “greatest financial offensive” against a supposedly defeated country.
In a post on X on Monday, Kazem Gharibabadi directly addressed Bessent, challenging his claims that Iran’s military capabilities had been dismantled.
Bessent claimed in a post on X that US President Donald Trump had “dismantled Iran’s military capabilities, destroyed nearly 100 percent of its military factories, and buried its nuclear program.”
He said the US will unveil new sanctions against Iran on Monday. He described the sanctions as “the single greatest financial offensive ever marshalled against an adversary.”
Gharibabadi wrote, “Mr. Bessent! Your narrative does not add up. You say Iran’s military capabilities have been ‘dismantled,’ 100 percent of its military factories have been ‘destroyed,’ and its nuclear program has been ‘buried’; yet, for this very Iran, the ‘greatest financial offensive” and the mobilization of ‘all US institutions and authorities’ have become necessary.”
He then questioned whether such measures could be described as a victory for Washington.
“Is this victory, or an admission of America’s defeat?” Gharibabadi asked.
On Wednesday, Trump announced what he called the “most crushing economic operation” against Iran, claiming that Tehran would face “economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale.” He also threatened sanctions against any country that does business with Iran.
The threat comes as his war on Iran, launched alongside the Israeli regime on February 28, has failed to reach any of its objectives.
In a post on his X account on Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned the United States that intensifying “failed” policies against Iran will only lead to further setbacks.
