Omani foreign minister to visit Iran to discuss Strait of Hormuz shipping
Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi is scheduled to visit Iran for talks on the latest developments in bilateral relations and regional issues, including efforts to establish a safe shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Monday that the Omani minister is set to arrive in Tehran on Tuesday.
He added that Albusaidi will meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and discuss a range of bilateral and regional issues.
The Iranian spokesperson noted that the trip comes within the framework of efforts to strengthen Tehran-Muscat cooperation and continue regular political consultations between the two sides, as the littoral states of the Strait of Hormuz.
Baghaei said the upcoming discussions are expected to focus on efforts to help promote peace and security in the region.
Iran and Oman, as the two coastal states, have been engaged in intensive negotiations for nearly three months to establish a safe shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has restricted transit through the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of global oil demand passes, following the start of the US-Israeli aggression in late February.
Earlier this month, Araghchi said Iran and Oman are “very close” to reaching an agreement on a new mechanism for managing shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, but the full reopening of the strategic waterway depends on US compliance with its obligations under the Islamabad memorandum of understanding.
Iran and the US signed a memorandum of understanding in June to end the American-Israeli aggression against the Islamic Republic, which had begun on February 28.
Under the understanding, Iran agreed to allow fee-free maritime transit through the Strait of Hormuz for a period of 60 days.
In compliance with the MoU, the Islamic Republic devised a special maritime route for vessels to cross the chokepoint, warning vessels against using illegal routes.
However, the US attempted to undermine Iran’s sovereignty by establishing an unsafe corridor near the Omani shores.
The unlawful US measure prompted Iran’s firm response to re-impose restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran says any movement in the strategic chokepoint must be conducted under Iranian arrangements, as per the understanding.
