Iranian team clinches bronze at 22nd International Geography Olympiad in Turkey

Iran’s national geography Olympiad team has won a bronze medal and three honorable mentions at the 22nd International Geography Olympiad (iGeo 2026), adding another achievement to the country’s strong record in international academic competitions.

The competition was held from August 11 to 17 in Istanbul, Turkey, bringing together more than 180 young participants from over 50 countries.

Iranian students delivered a strong performance, with Helia Khodabandeh-Loo winning a bronze medal, while Artina Heydari, Setayesh Hagh-Nazari and Sana Karbalayi received honorable mentions.

The latest achievement adds to a series of strong performances by Iranian students in major international Olympiads this year.

In informatics, Iran’s national team secured two silver medals, one bronze medal and one honorable mention at the 38th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI 2026) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The competition was held from August 9 to 16 and featured leading young computer science talents from more than 97 countries.

Iran’s national team at the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI) won one gold, two silver and one bronze medal at the third edition of the competition.

Iranian students also achieved notable results at the 56th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO 2026), held in Bucaramanga, Colombia, from July 4 to 12. The Iranian team won three gold and two silver medals at the competition, which brought together more than 400 high school students from over 90 countries.

Iran has likewise continued to post strong results in mathematics. At the fourth International Mathematics Competition of Shanghai (IMSC 2026), Iran’s national team won the championship title, finishing first among 49 teams with four gold and two silver medals, ahead of Poland and Brazil.

The country also maintains a strong record at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). At the 66th edition of the competition, held in Australia in 2025, Iran ranked 12th worldwide after winning two gold, three silver and one bronze medal, improving on its 19th-place finish the previous year.

Iranian students also recorded an outstanding result at the 36th International Biology Olympiad (IBO 2025) in the Philippines, winning three gold medals and one silver to place Iran second overall among 81 participating countries.

The latest geography medal further underscores the continued performance of Iranian students across a wide range of academic disciplines on the international stage.
