Hamas: Egypt talks focus on ceasefire, Israel’s compliance with Gaza roadmap
The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas says a senior delegation’s talks with Egyptian officials in Cairo are focused on strengthening the Gaza ceasefire and ensuring Israel adheres to commitments under the US-backed so-called “peace plan.”
Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said on Sunday that the meetings are part of the group’s ongoing contacts with mediators and diplomatic efforts over the situation in Gaza.
He went on to say that the group would use the discussions to brief Egyptian mediators on Israeli violations and to seek guarantees that Israel complies with the roadmap agreed with the so-called “Board of Peace.”
Separately, a Hamas official said on Saturday that a high-level delegation led by the group’s chief, Khalil al-Hayya, was due to travel to Cairo on Sunday for talks with Egyptian officials. The delegation was expected to discuss measures to reinforce the ceasefire, the source said.
The talks come as the ceasefire in Gaza, which has been in place since October 2025, remains under strain. Gaza’s Health Ministry says Israeli attacks have continued despite the truce, killing at least 1,260 Palestinians and injuring more than 4,100 others.
The figures are in addition to the broader toll from Israel’s genocidal war, which began in October 2023 and has killed more than 73,000 Palestinians and wounded over 174,000, according to Palestinian authorities.
As part of the US-backed peace plan, Hamas announced in early July that it would dissolve the governing body it had run in Gaza for nearly two decades
Hamas has subsequently said it was prepared to transfer authority to a technocratic body.
However, the regime has prevented the body from entering Gaza to begin its duties.
The Israeli regime has also continued carrying out attacks in Gaza since the plan was launched, while also maintaining restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid.
