US is becoming unaffordable empire, can’t really finance wars: Analyst
Jack Rasmus, Professor of Political Economy at St. Mary's College, thinks the US is pouring unprecedented sums into its war posture, with total defense‑related spending exceeding $2 trillion a year and the conflict with Iran alone projected to cost around $300 billion this year.
He says this surge is driving the US deficit over $2 trillion, pushing interest payments on the national debt to record levels, and exposing what he calls an “unaffordable empire.”
Ramos argues that while Washington criticizes Iran’s spending priorities, America’s own infrastructure is deteriorating and most citizens want the government to address inflation, job losses, AI‑driven disruptions, and unaffordable healthcare and housing.
He maintains that US policy is being shaped by wealthy oligarchs and pro‑Israel interests, not by the American public, which he says overwhelmingly opposes the war.
