US university begins academic year with mass shooting
A mass shooting at a notable US university has left multiple people injured, with students shocked by the incident just at the start of their academic year.
Reports in US media published on Saturday said that at least five people had been shot at Virginia State University, located 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of Richmond, in the eastern United States.
“A shooting occurred in the area of the Quad Annexes involving multiple victims, who were transported to area hospitals,” police said after arriving at the university’s dormitories, where shooting victims were found.
The five victims who received gunshot wounds were transported to hospitals, reports said, adding that one of the victims was in critical condition after being listed as having life-threatening injuries because of the shooting.
Students described the attack as horrific, saying it could affect them at the start of the academic year.
“To start a new year with this event is very tragic. It casts a shadow in the minds of all students,” said a former official at Virginia State University, an academic institution with some 5,700 students, most of whom are undergraduates.
Gun control advocacy groups have reported around 300 mass shootings in the US so far this year. They classify all shootings killing or injuring at least four victims as mass shootings.
US government officials, including members of Congress, have repeatedly ignored calls for greater gun controls in the country in past years, despite a surge in fatal attacks on members of the public, including children and students.
