Trump’s war on Iran ‘disastrous’ and ‘unwinnable,’ US senator says
US Democratic Senator Chris Murphy says President Donald Trump’s “disastrous and unwinnable” war against Iran has led to Washington’s biggest foreign policy disaster in more than two decades.
Murphy wrote in a post on X that the aggression Trump launched against Iran in late February has been “disastrous” for the United States.
“It’s impossible to overhype how disastrous this war has been,” he wrote, adding, “It was unwinnable from the start.”
“Trump’s hubris has led to the biggest foreign policy disaster since Iraq,” Murphy said, referring to the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.

In an interview with NBC News, the senator said last week that Trump had “lost this war” with Iran, warning that continued fighting was weakening the United States while strengthening the Islamic Republic.
“America is weaker. Iran is stronger,” Murphy said, adding that he would support even what he called a “bad deal” with Iran to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Murphy said the cost of reopening the strategic waterway was rising as negotiations remained stalled.
He said Trump needs to end the war “because every day that the war continues, America gets weaker, Iran gets stronger, and people here in the United States get screwed as prices go up and up and up.”
Murphy also said he would oppose further funding for the war but would support replenishing US munitions after the conflict ends.
Trump recently acknowledged serious shortages in American military stockpiles, while reports have also revealed that the US has depleted significant portions of its advanced munitions stockpiles five months after launching attacks against Iran.
Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi, the spokesman for the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), said earlier this week that Iran had exposed Washington’s strategic vulnerabilities by forcing the costs of war back onto the United States, citing the conflict’s impact on the US economy.
Mohebbi also cited the erosion of US weapons stocks as another consequence of the war against Iran, saying that Washington’s strategic weapons had suffered significant depletion and could not be quickly replaced.
