Rashida Tlaib rally canceled after Florida lawmaker labels it ‘anti-Jew’
A rally in Florida featuring Democratic US Representative Rashida Tlaib, a vocal critic of the Israeli regime, has been canceled after a local lawmaker claimed the event was “anti-Jew.”
Tlaib, the first Palestinian American member of Congress, was scheduled to appear on Friday at a rally for three candidates in Florida’s upcoming Democratic Party primary.
Michael Gottlieb, a Democratic member of the Florida House of Representatives, blasted the rally on Facebook on Thursday.
“The Venue Fort Lauderdale is hosting an Anti-Israel and Anti-Zionism coalition of candidates; make no mistake, this is anti-Jew,” Gottlieb claimed.
“This is a coalition of candidates and organizations who are on the strongly pro-Palestinian/anti-Israel left, several of whom have been involved in disputes over where anti-Zionism crosses into antisemitism,” the lawmaker added.
The Venue canceled the rally after Gottlieb, who is also chairman of the Florida Legislative Jewish Caucus, posted his opposition to the rally.
In a statement, The Venue Fort Lauderdale, which was scheduled to host the event, cited “increased security concerns” for its decision to cancel the event.
It said The Venue is a Jewish-owned business and “our values and commitment to the Jewish community are deeply important to us.”
Gottlieb, a Jew, later thanked The Venue on Facebook for canceling the event.
Tlaib has repeatedly condemned antisemitism. She points out that her support for the Palestinian Hamas resistance movement alongside her condemnation of the Israeli regime forces’ illegal occupation of Palestinian territories and its brutal attacks on the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon do not stem from antisemitism.
The Florida rally titled Chomp The Oligarchy was planned in support of Democratic US House candidates Oliver Larkin and Elijah Manley and US Senate candidate Angie Nixon.
Larkin and Manley are running against Florida Reps. Jared Moskowitz and Debbie Wasserman Schultz, both Jews.
