Iran’s Hamidreza Zarei won three gold medals at the Asian Youth & Junior Weightlifting Championships while also setting a world record in the clean and jerk.
Competing in in the men’s 95-kilogram junior category on Thursday in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Zarei opened with a perfect snatch series, lifting 155, 162 and 164 kilograms to take gold in the discipline.
He was equally dominant in the clean and jerk. Zarei successfully lifted 200 and 206 kilograms before completing his third attempt with 214 kilograms.
The lift earned him the clean and jerk gold and set a new world record in the event.

Zarei finished with a 378-kilogram total to claim his third gold medal and the Asian junior title in the 95kg category.
The championships are being held in Tashkent from Aug. 7-14 and feature youth athletes aged 13 to 17 and juniors aged 15 to 20. The competition awards medals in the snatch, clean and jerk and total in each category.
Zarei’s performance added another strong result for Iran at an event that has produced several medal-winning performances by the country’s young lifters.
Beheshti completes three-gold sweep
Iran’s Mahsa Beheshti also produced a three-gold performance in the women’s over-77kg youth category.
Beheshti went six-for-six across the competition. She lifted 106, 108 and 113 kilograms in the snatch to take gold with 113kg.
She then successfully lifted 136 and 142 kilograms in the clean and jerk before completing a 148kg third attempt.
That gave Beheshti her second gold of the competition. Her 261kg total secured the third and made her the Asian youth champion in the over-77kg category.
Beheshti is also entered in the women’s 86kg junior category, while the Tashkent championships continue through Friday.
