Firefighters battle wildfires across Spain
Military firefighters battled on Wednesday (August 12) wildfires in the northern region of Huesca and in Huelva, southern Spain.
Andalusia's regional head of emergencies, Antonio Sanz, told reporters on Monday (August 11) that extinguishing the fire in the southwest of the country around the medieval town of Niebla was akin to a "long-distance obstacle race" and was expected to last several days.
More than 600 people have been evacuated from the area while further precautionary measures were being assessed, as that wildfire has already affected a surface of nearly 25,000 hectares, regional media said.
Several Spanish regions are under extreme heat alert on Wednesday, according to weather agency AEMET, as temperatures were set to rise to 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), with a "high" or "very high" wildfire risk.
