US-Israeli soldier who took part in Gaza genocide commits suicide in New York
A US-born Israeli soldier who took part in Israel’s genocidal war on the Gaza Strip committed suicide after reportedly suffering severe psychological trauma following his deployment in the besieged Palestinian territory.
William Shakin, 25, moved to the Israeli-occupied territories after October 7, 2023, left university and enlisted in the Israeli military, later serving with the Golani Brigade’s 13th Battalion during the regime's ground attack in Gaza.
Friends and associates said his mental health deteriorated rapidly after he returned from the besieged strip, with the former soldier struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other severe psychological trauma.
Friends said he continued to struggle psychologically after losing fellow soldiers during Israel’s genocidal war against Palestinians in Gaza.
According to figures compiled by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, at least 18 active-duty Israeli soldiers have died by suicide since the beginning of 2026.
Shakin’s case comes amid growing concern in the occupied territories over the psychological impact of Israel’s prolonged aggression against Gaza.
Israeli figures indicate that reported PTSD cases among military personnel have risen by nearly 40 percent since late 2023, while thousands of wounded soldiers have sought treatment for psychological trauma linked to their participation in the aggression.
The reported psychological trauma among Israeli soldiers comes as Palestinians continue to endure the devastating consequences of the genocidal war, with thousands killed and injured and vast areas of the besieged territory reduced to rubble.
Gaza’s Ministry of Health said on Monday that one Palestinian had died from previously sustained wounds and another had been injured during the preceding 24 hours.
The ministry said some victims remained trapped beneath rubble or on roads because ambulance and civil-defense crews were unable to reach them.
According to the ministry, 1,259 Palestinians have been killed, 4,146 injured and 807 bodies recovered from the rubble since the so-called ceasefire took effect on October 11, 2025.
The ministry said the overall Palestinian death toll from Israel’s genocidal military campaign in Gaza since October 7, 2023, had reached 73,387, with 174,257 people injured.
