Israeli minister ridicules female Palestinian inmate over dire incarceration conditions
The Israeli regime’s so-called security minister has taunted a female Palestinian abductee who had expressed concerns regarding the severe conditions of her detention and the absence of essential supplies, telling her that “prison is not a hotel.”
The exchange, shared by Itamar Ben-Gvir on the instant messaging application Telegram on Friday, was captured in a video recorded inside an Israeli prison.
Through an interpreter, Ben-Gvir inquired about the abductee’s condition.
The female Palestinian abductee responded that she was not in a good state and not feeling well, having developed depression and experienced psychological distress.
“How are the detention conditions here?” Ben-Gvir then asked.
“There is no good food, no clean water, nothing,” she replied.
“The food should not be good. This is not a hotel,” the 50-year-old hawkish leader of the anti-Arab Otzma Yehudit (Jewish Power) party said.
“Those who do things should consider the consequences. Anyone who commits a crime must learn, especially if it is against the people of Israel.”
“This is not a hotel. It used to be, but it no longer is. You should think about what you did,” Ben-Gvir added.
Ben-Gvir has gained infamy for his derogatory and racist comments about Palestinians, including a statement from 2023: “The rights of me, my wife, and children to move freely in the West Bank outweigh those of the Arabs.”
This May, his office shared a video of him mocking participants in a humanitarian aid flotilla to Gaza that was unlawfully assaulted in international waters.
As the humanitarian detainees were compelled to kneel with their hands bound while the Israeli national anthem played, Ben-Gvir remarked, “Welcome to Israel. We are the landlords here.”
Since assuming office in late 2022, Ben-Gvir has imposed stricter conditions on Palestinian abductees, which include measures such as food deprivation, medical neglect, torture, and solitary confinement.
He recently suggested the idea of placing crocodiles outside prisons where Palestinians are held as a security precaution.
According to Palestinian and Israeli human rights organizations, Israel currently holds approximately 9,500 Palestinians behind bars, including 94 women and more than 350 children. They are subjected to starvation, torture, and medical neglect.
