Iranian forces kill 4 PJAK terrorists in clash near Iraqi border
Iranian forces have neutralized four members of PJAK, a notorious terrorist group operating in the border areas between Iran and Iraq.
The four terrorists were killed just after they entered Iranian territory from the Iraqi Kurdistan region, according to a Monday statement from the spokesman of the Iranian police overseeing the country's Border Guard Command.
Brigadier General Saeid Montazer al-Mahdi said that armed clashes erupted between the Iranian border guards and the terrorists in the border region of Baneh, where the PJAK elements were traveling in a car.
“During the inspection of the vehicle and the clash site, significant quantities of weapons and ammunition were discovered, including several pistols, magazines, live rounds, and hand grenades,” said Montazer al-Mahdi.
Iran has been tough on terrorist groups operating near its border regions, especially those based in Kurdistan, in recent years.
The country has signed a security pact with the government in neighboring Iraq to have elements of PJAK and other groups pushed away from mountainous regions near its borders.
Iran has also fired missiles and drones at the hideouts of PJAK terrorists in Kurdistan over the past years.
Reports that emerged in the early days of the US-Israeli war of aggression on Iran in March showed that Washington had equipped and funded Kurdish terrorists for a planned insurgency inside Iranian territory.
However, later reports and statements from US government officials suggested the terrorists had failed to advance inside Iran despite receiving abundant supplies of weapons and funding from the US and Israel.
