New Hamas chief says Palestinian security key to stability in West Asia
The newly appointed Hamas chief, Khalil al-Hayya, says regional stability cannot be achieved without security for the Palestinian people, warning that the Israeli regime's genocidal war on Gaza remains the main source of instability across West Asia.
In his first televised address since assuming leadership of Hamas' political bureau, al-Hayya said on Wednesday that recent regional developments had proved that "the stability of the Palestinian people is the key to the stability of the region."
Urging the international community to take action to halt Israel's military aggression against Gaza, he said "the standard of justice collapses entirely" if the world fails to protect the Palestinian people in the besieged territory.
Al-Hayya reiterated that Hamas' foremost priority remains securing a comprehensive end to Israel's aggression in Gaza and a full withdrawal of Israeli forces from the coastal strip.
He called on countries mediating ceasefire negotiations to pressure the Israeli regime to implement existing agreements and move to the next phase of the process.
Al-Hayya said Hamas also remains committed to restoring "dignified living conditions" in Gaza, preventing displacement, accelerating reconstruction efforts and securing the release of prisoners.
He added that the resistance movement seeks to achieve Palestinian national unity through immediate dialogue aimed at rebuilding Palestinian institutions, particularly the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), on democratic and consensual foundations.
According to al-Hayya, strengthening Hamas' ties with Arab and Muslim countries, mobilizing regional support to stop the Israeli regime's "killing and genocide machine" in Gaza, and urging the international community and the United Nations to protect Palestinians and hold Israeli "war criminals" accountable remain among the movement's key priorities.
On Monday, Hamas announced the election of al-Hayya as head of its political bureau, succeeding Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces in the southern Gaza city of Rafah in October 2024.
Al-Hayya also vowed to continue Sinwar's path of resistance against the Israeli regime, saying Hamas would remain committed to confronting Israeli occupation and aggression.
