A new survey has found that the majority of the citizens of the member states of the European Union favor a foreign policy shift away from the United States.

According to a Belgian-sponsored survey conducted by the Bertelsmann Stiftung foundation and released on Friday, most Europeans favor moving away from their reliance on the United States.

Seventy-three percent of EU citizens favor an independent foreign policy, believing it is time for the EU to "go its own way" in international affairs.

The 10 percent increase in those favoring an independent EU stance, up from 63 percent in a previous survey, marks a significant decrease in confidence in the United States.

The survey found that only 31 percent of the respondents view the US as the EU's most important ally, down from 51 percent in autumn 2024.

The majority of respondents described Washington as an untrustworthy ally, with concerns particularly high in parts of Western Europe, particularly in Belgium.

Now, two-thirds of Belgians are saying they do not trust Washington, while only 23 percent see the US as the EU’s primary ally.

The survey attributed a rise in anti-Americanism among the EU citizens to the private disapproval ratings of US President Donald Trump.

"The Trump presidency has left deep scars on the transatlantic relationship … A polarizing American president and mounting geopolitical tensions have pushed European public opinion towards a more self-reliant stance," according to the survey.

Meanwhile, the decline in Trump's popularity isn't limited to the EU and spreads to far beyond.

Trump's notoriety -- resulting from the Epstein Scandal, his international tariff wars, and his criminal aggression against Iran -- has not only resulted in a decrease in US popularity, but also global insecurity and market instability.
