Rights group: 4 Gaza doctors suffering starvation, dire conditions in Israeli prisons

Palestinian doctor from the Gaza Strip, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya

A human rights group says four Palestinian doctors abducted by Israeli military forces during the genocidal war against the Gaza Strip are suffering starvation at Israeli prisons, describing their condition as "catastrophic."

Physicians for Human Rights Israel said in a statement on Tuesday that one of its lawyers visited one of the abductees at the Negev Prison in the southern part of the occupied lands on May 11.

The organization identified the quartet as Dr. Mohammad Obeid, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, Dr. Murad al-Qouqa, and Dr. Akram Abu Ouda.

The statement added that the four doctors have been held for extended periods without charges.

The group also reported that scabies was spreading among Palestinian abductees, which was exacerbated by a lack of treatment and inadequate medical response.

The organization said the four doctors appeared before Israeli courts in recent months, which repeatedly extended their detention without charges or legal representation.

The abductees described their prison conditions as “catastrophic from both humanitarian and health perspectives.”

Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, was arrested on December 27, 2024.

He was kidnapped after Israeli forces raided the facility and forced him out at gunpoint after destroying the complex and putting it out of service.

Since a US-brokered ceasefire took effect in October 2025, about 850 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces, according to Gaza’s health ministry.

The Israeli regime has also been accused of violating the “ceasefire” agreement by restricting the entry of agreed quantities of food, medicine, medical supplies, and shelter materials into Gaza, where about 2.4 million Palestinians, including 1.5 million displaced, are living in desperate conditions.
