Christian lawmakers of the Iranian Parliament have condemned US President Donald Trump’s insult to the Pope as affront to humanity, supporting the pontiff’s anti-war stance.
In a joint statement on Tuesday, three Christian legislators of Iran's Parliament, on behalf of the Iranian Christian community, condemned Trump’s insults to the Pope Louis XIV by calling the leader of the Roman Catholic Church “weak” and posting a picture of himself as Jesus Christ healing the sick.
Trump's insult came after the pontiff suggested over the weekend that a “delusion of omnipotence” is fueling the US-Israeli war on Iran.
On his Truth Social, the American president lambasted the Pope for being “WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy.”
“I don't want a Pope who thinks it's OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon,” Trump added, repeating the same groundless allegation against the Islamic Republic.
Iran’s Christian lawmakers, however, stressed “God wants us to establish and spread peace in the world because He wishes us to be and act like a single human family.”
While appreciating “His Holiness Pope Louis XIV”s firm stance regarding “the attack by criminal enemies” against Iran, the legislators stressed that, as representatives of the Christian community in Iran's Parliament and on behalf of all Christian sects residing in the country, “we condemn insults by the delusional American president against “his Highness.”
“We declare that insulting your Highness, as the spiritual father, not only is contrary to Christian teachings, but also constitutes a blatant attack on the call for peace, justice and humanity,” the statement further read.
The lawmakers concluded by stressing that “insulting any religious leader and desecrating sanctities, particularly Jesus Christ, the symbol of peace and brotherhood, is not acceptable to any free person.”
On Monday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also condemned Trump’s insults to Pope Louis XIV, declaring that the desecration of Jesus is not acceptable to any free person.
“His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, I condemn the insult to Your Excellency on behalf of the great nation of Iran, and declare that the desecration of Jesus, the prophet of peace and brotherhood, is not acceptable to any free person. I wish you glory by Allah,” the Iranian president wrote in a post on his X account.
The United States and Israel initiated a large-scale and unprovoked war of aggression against Iran on February 28, assassinating Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and several high-ranking military commanders as well as killing hundreds of civilians.
