Iranian, Omani FMs consult on arrangements for next round of nuclear talks

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi (R) and his Omani counterpart Badr bin Hamad al-Busaidi

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has consulted with his Omani counterpart on the arrangements for holding the next round of indirect nuclear negotiations between the Islamic Republic and the United States.

The top diplomat spoke to Badr bin Hamad al-Busaidi in a telephone conversation on Monday to discuss and exchange views on the latest status of the indirect negotiations.

Earlier, the Omani foreign minister, expressing support for the negotiations, had confirmed that a third round of Iran-US talks would be held next Thursday in Geneva.

Since February 6, Tehran and Washington have held two rounds of fresh nuclear talks with Omani mediation. The first round took place in the Omani capital Muscat, while the second was held in the Swiss city.

On Sunday, Araghchi told CBS News that there was still "a good chance" for a diplomatic solution to the nuclear issue based on a win-win outcome for all sides.

“One fact is there, that if they (the US) want to find a resolution for Iran's peaceful nuclear program, the only way is diplomacy,” he said. “So, there is no need for any military buildup, and military buildup cannot help it and cannot pressurize us,” the top Iranian negotiator pointed out.

The remarks came amid significant American military buildup in the region, including around Iran, featuring two aircraft carriers as well as numerous warplanes and missile systems.

The Islamic Republic has said it would defend itself decisively in the event that the buildup was followed by another round of military adventurism targeting the country.

Also on Sunday, Araghchi spoke with his Iraqi opposite number, Fuad Hussein, on the phone, addressing the latest regional and international developments.

The former detailed the latest developments concerning the nuclear talks, while Hussein reaffirmed Baghdad’s support for the diplomatic process and expressed hope that the negotiations would lead to desirable results for the Islamic Republic as well as peace and stability in the region.

Araghchi had also spoken with Qatar’s Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani regarding the talks on Saturday, when the two sides reviewed the indirect negotiations, and emphasized continued consultations and cooperation to facilitate and advance the diplomatic path within the framework of regional cooperation.
