Iraqis renew pledge of support for Iran against potential US attack

Iraqi groups say they are ready to defend Iran against any potential US attack.

Political and paramilitary groups in Iraq have renewed their pledge of support for Iran amid heightened threats of US military action against the country.

The Al-Araby Al-Jadeed said in a Sunday report that groups like Kataib Hezbollah and Harakat al-Nujaba had issued calls for the recruitment of volunteer forces to back Iran in a potential military confrontation with the United States.

A source from the Iraqi Resistance Coordination Committee, which includes seven major political and paramilitary groups, was quoted in the report as saying that Iraqi groups have declared their preparedness to participate in any war involving Iran and the US.

The unidentified source said that the groups had adopted detailed plans to clarify how they would support Iran in the event of war.

Al-Araby Al-Jadeed said that four of the seven groups had finalized their plans for involvement in the war. However, it added that the implementation of the plans will depend on what happens on the ground and how far the war expands in the region.

A political analyst told the newspaper that Iraqi resistance groups can rely on their considerable weapons stocks, which include drones and short- and medium-range missiles, to target US bases across the region.

Ali Nasser said that videos have also been released showing underground tunnels where Iraqi groups store their missiles, causing major concern for the US and Israel.

Iraqi factions that sympathize with Iran have repeatedly declared their commitment to supporting Tehran and its campaign against foreign military presence in the region.

The renewed declaration of support comes amid growing threats of military confrontation between Iran and the US. Tensions have escalated since last month, when Washington began amassing significant naval and air power in waters near Iran.

Tehran has warned that it would respond decisively to any attack on its territory.
