Baghaei to Press TV: Iran enters Geneva talks with ‘open mind and open eyes’

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei speaks to Press TV in Geneva ahead of Iran-US indirect talks on February 17, 2026.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei has told Press TV that Tehran is approaching indirect negotiations with the United States in Oman with “an open mind and open eyes,” stressing that sanctions relief is integral to any nuclear agreement.

Speaking ahead of the talks on Tuesday, Baghaei said the negotiating process has effectively already begun, with the Iranian delegation set to head to the venue shortly.

“We are here, as I said, with good intentions and seriousness. We are result-oriented. The time is very important for us, is crucial,” he added.

Baghaei said Iran hopes the United States will demonstrate “the same level of seriousness and good intention” as the talks proceed.

He said that the Iranian delegation held discussions a day earlier with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, during which Tehran conveyed its viewpoints, concerns, and demands.

The delegation also met with Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, to consult on the technical aspects of the nuclear issue.

Baghaei said Iran’s team includes technical experts as well as specialists on sanctions removal, underlining that lifting sanctions is “part and parcel” of any potential deal.

He added that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has expressed readiness to remain in Oman “for days or even weeks” if necessary to finalize an agreement, emphasizing that Tehran is serious, result-oriented, and mindful of the importance of time.

Iranian and American delegations, led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, resumed nuclear talks in Muscat on February 6, months after Israel’s aggression in June 2025. The Omani foreign minister was shuttling between the sides, with the talks being held indirectly as before.

The second round of indirect talks between Iran and the United States is being held in Geneva with the mediation of Oman’s foreign minister at the Omani mission. The negotiating table brings together Witkoff and Araghchi, following what both sides described as a constructive but preliminary first round in Muscat.

The negotiations will take place as US President Donald Trump has deployed military forces to the region, heightening concerns about possible new military action. US officials said on February 12 that the Pentagon was sending an additional aircraft carrier to the region, adding thousands more troops along with fighter aircraft and guided-missile destroyers.
