FM Araghchi departs Muscat for Doha following nuclear talks with US
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi left Muscat for Doha on Friday evening after concluding a new round of nuclear talks between Iran and the United States in the Omani capital.
Araghchi traveled to Qatar to attend the 17th Al Jazeera Forum, where he has been invited as a special guest.
He is scheduled to deliver a speech at the gathering on Saturday and hold talks with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.
The departure came hours after the conclusion of indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington, mediated by Oman.
Speaking to Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB in Muscat, Araghchi described the latest round of talks as a “good start” and said the process could continue.
“The decision on how to proceed with the negotiations will be made after consultations with the capitals,” he said following the talks.
He added that regarding the continuation of the negotiations, “it seems that a consensus exists,” while emphasizing that any further steps depend on consultations in Tehran and Washington and a decision on how to move forward.
Iranian officials have said that Tehran’s main demand in the Muscat talks is the effective and verifiable lifting of economic and financial sanctions.
On the nuclear issue, Iran maintains that enrichment on its own soil is its legal right and has described it as a red line in the negotiations.
