US, Israel suffered another defeat in terrorist riots after June war: Qalibaf

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf (L) and Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein meet in Tehran on January 18, 2026.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf says the United States and Israeli regime suffered another defeat in the recent terrorist riots in Iran after the failure of their joint military aggression against the country in June last year.

“The Zionist regime (Israel) aims to weaken and disintegrate Muslim nations with the purpose of dominating them,” Qalibaf said in a meeting with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein in Tehran on Sunday.

He added that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's main strategy has been to undermine the independence and power of regional countries and sow discord among them.

He cautioned that the Israeli regime tries to win the support of the US and European countries and exploit the regional situation in an attempt to become the dominant military power in the region.

The Israeli regime, backed by the US, launched the military aggression against Iran in mid-June 2025, believing that they could destroy Iran’s power in the aerospace field, the top parliamentarian noted.

However, Qalibaf said, they failed to achieve their sinister goals thanks to the great efforts of the Armed Forces and the Iranian nation’s prudence.f

In line with this objective, the Israeli regime carried out another “terrorist war” against Iran over the past 10 days, with the backing of US President Donald Trump, who openly pledged to support terrorists, he emphasized.

“They thought that they could conduct a terrorist act from within [Iran] and, after the country was destabilized, launch a military attack from outside,” Qalibaf explained.

He said they took actions in Iran in the recent riots that were far more violent than the terrorist activities in Syria and Iraq; however, the Iranian security forces swiftly arrested their ringleaders.

The Iranian Parliament speaker urged Muslim and regional countries to be cautious that even the slightest retreat in the face of the Zionist regime will mean the weakening of all Muslim states.

The Iraqi foreign minister, for his part, said the security of Iran and Iraq is an important part of the security of the entire region.

Hussein stressed the importance of improving relations between Tehran and Baghdad at all levels.

Regional countries must remain vigilant: Iran FM

In a meeting with his Iraqi counterpart earlier on Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the US and Israeli regime are directly responsible for the terrorist incidents and riots in Iran.

He added that the US threat to attack Iran, in the midst of acts of terrorism against the Iranian nation, was a clear indication of US and Israeli security and intelligence agencies coordinating with riot ringleaders to destabilize Iran and the entire region.

The top Iranian diplomat urged all regional states to remain vigilant in the face of malign interference in the internal affairs of other countries.

The Iraqi foreign minister, for his part, said excellent ties between Tehran and Baghdad serve their common interests.

He added that Iraq would spare no effort to help safeguard security and peace in the region, saying all countries must remain committed to the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law.
